Compression, extension, torsion and conical: which spring type?
The differences between the four main spring types and where each one is used.
Compression spring
Resists axial loads that compress it and returns to its original position. The most common type — found in valves, dampers and mechanisms of all kinds.
Extension spring
Works under loads that stretch it. It has hooks at the ends and usually initial tension that keeps it closed at rest. Used in gates, levers and return mechanisms.
Torsion spring
Stores energy by twisting and applies angular torque through two legs. Common in hinges, clips and rotating mechanisms.
Conical spring
Has a variable diameter (small and large), letting it “telescope” and take up little space when compressed. Ideal when a low solid height is needed.
In the designer, pick the type at the top and adjust the dimensions specific to each one.
