Material type

Category: Materials & treatments

The alloy the spring is made from, chosen by strength, environment and cost.

The most common are music wire (high-carbon steel, high strength), stainless steel (corrosion resistance), chrome silicon (high loads and temperatures) and phosphor bronze / beryllium copper (conductivity and non-magnetism).

The material sets the spring's shear modulus, allowable stress and fatigue life.
