Extension spring
Category: Spring types
A helical spring that works under loads that stretch it, storing energy as it is pulled and returning to its original length when released.
It has hooks or loops at the ends for attachment and usually initial tension that keeps the coils closed at rest. It is used in gates, levers, latches and return mechanisms.
The coils are wound tightly together (no pitch), so the spring only begins to extend once the load exceeds the initial tension.
