Compression spring

Category: Spring types

A helical spring designed to resist axial loads that compress it and return to its original length when the force is removed.

It is the most common spring type in industry. The coils have a pitch (gap between them) that allows compression; under load the spring stores energy and releases it as it returns.

Its key parameters are wire diameter, outer diameter, free length and coil count — from these you calculate spring rate, stress and solid height.
